TOGETHER WE WILL

  1. Consider the instability of mainstream beekeeping.

  2. Learn how to mimic the interior of a rewilded hive.

  3. Construct a Comfort hive using lumber from a local sawmill.

COMFORT HIVE

If you opted to take home a hive, please bring $40 cash.

ARRIVAL

The day begins at 12pm. Kindly plan to arrive 5-10 minutes early.

PARKING

Park on the side of the road, in line with other cars.

THE CLASSROOM

We will gather and build outside. The land has uneven surfaces, muddy ground, tall grass, honey bees and free range chickens. We suggest bringing shoes you don’t mind getting dirty, layers of comfortable clothing, a sun hat, UV protection, etc.

Unless there is a heavy storm, this gathering will be held rain or shine.

TOOLS TO BRING

Bring your own work gloves and safety goggles. All other tools will be provided. Optionally, all are welcome to bring the following tools to use or share.

  • Hammer

  • Measuring tape

  • Power drill, battery operated

  • Circular saw, battery operated

  • Sawhorses

WATER AND FOOD

Bring a reusable water bottle. We will have filtered spring water on site for refills. Food will not be served. We suggest eating lunch prior and/or bringing a snack for yourself.

If you’re looking to grab a delicious sandwich before the event, consider Five Kids Bakehouse located at 5 Commercial St, Gilbertsville, NY 13776, about 15-minutes away from our address. They’re much more than a sandwich shop, give yourself some extra time to chill and browse!

WELLNESS

If you or anyone in your household has been in contact with someone who is sick, or is showing any symptoms of being sick before or on the day of the event, kindly cancel your visit.

ABOUT US

Backland NY is an educational apiary and seasonal garden practicing small-scale regenerative stewardship. Our work centers the survivability of managed hives through the biomimicry of rewilded hives. We support biodiversity and grow rich flora for all pollinators. We regard the rewilded honey bee nest as the optimal example of their living conditions and distribute this perspective at our annual gathering in Unadilla, NY.
